Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly
in recognition of some of the 'greats' of history. On 27th December 1890, the Barbarian Club Touring Side played their inaugural game of rugby at Friary Field Hartlepool. The Baa-baa's, as they became affectionately known were the brainchild of Percy Carpmael, who aimed for a cosmopolitan membership 'with no discrimination for colour or creed'. To date they have included players from 27 different countries along with our own Burton man, Frank Evershed, an 1889-93 England International. Percy made a unique contribution to sport and touchingly he passed away on the 46th anniversary of that first game, when his team had beaten Hartlepool Rovers 9 - 4 |
